Description

This initial five (5) day course will provide Health and Safety Representatives (HSRs) of organisations under the jurisdiction of the Comcare scheme to acquire the knowledge and skills to enable them to exercise their powers for the purpose of promoting and ensuring the health and safety at work of members of their work group.

Health and safety representatives (HSRs) need relevant knowledge and skills to allow them to exercise their powers to promote and ensure the health and safety of members of their work-groups.

Under the WHS Regulations and outlined in section 72 of the WHS Act they are entitled to attend a training course in work health and safety that is approved by the regulator (Comcare). This includes a five-day initial course of training, suitable for HSRs elected after 1 January 2012 who wish to exercise their full powers and functions, in particular sections 85 and 90 of the WHS Act.

Course Accreditation

This course is hosted by Institute of Training and Further Education (iTFE) and delivered by Occupational Safety and Health Associates (OSHA), approved (by Comcare) to conduct both Initial WHS (5-day) and Annual refresher (1-day) courses.

Who should attend

Elected Health and Safety Representatives (and deputy HSRs) from organisations within the commonwealth jurisdiction.  Managers, supervisors, members of Health and Safety Committees and others with an interest in ensuring health and safety of work and workplaces also will benefit from attending the course

Learning Outcomes

The course focuses on:

  • Interpreting the work health and safety legislative framework and its relationship to the HSR;
  • Identifying key parties, legislative obligations and duties;
  • Establishing representation in the workplace;
  • Participating in consultation and issues resolution;
  • Represent members in the WHS risk management process undertaken by the PCBU; and
  • Issuing a provisional improvement notice (PIN) and directing the cessation of work.

Entry Requirements

Language and Literacy requirements for the course are:

  • Writing is required to the level of completing written in-class activities.
  • Reading is required to enable the determination of information through the student manual.

Course Cost

The cost of the course is $945.00 plus GST, with all learning resources included.

Duration

Five (5) day course.

Assessment

There is no formal assessment as part of this course. Upon successful completion, participants will be issued with a Certificate of Attendance.
